Spring Hill Philosophy
We, the Spring Hill teachers, believe in an educational program that respects diverse learning styles and meets the social, emotional, and academic needs of every learner. The Spring Hill teachers believe in a balance of directed learning and student choice as children practice making responsible decisions.
The Spring Hill Program is modeled after our country's Constitution. This format empowers students to act as legislators who have a voice in their daily experiences. This participatory democracy focuses on citizenship and encourages exposure to, and understanding of diverse ideas. The students feel a sense of community as they actively make positive changes to the program and the school.
In the Spring Hill Program, many classes are multi grade and teachers know all of the students. The teachers in Spring Hill teach all content areas, math, language arts, and units, to three groups of children. By teaching all the subjects, we share our own enthusiasm for learning, as well as provide an integrated and multidisciplinary education. Science and Social Studies are taught in thematic units. Students and their parents select from choices based on one major topic. This allows families to help children pursue their interests, or further explore areas of curiosity.
Our family-like atmosphere fosters caring and supportive classrooms. Since the majority of students change classes for math, language arts, and units, they have the opportunity to experience different teaching styles as well as broaden their friendship circle.
Teachers utilize sound educational practices and flexible instruction while collaborating with students and parents. Regular meetings take place with parents and students to determine academic and social goals for each student.
Spring Hill believes that academic growth continues outside school, and that parents are active partners in their childís education.
